Tony’s Weekly Guitar Newsletter – Carribean Cruise Information

Dear Friend,

Welcome to the Tony’s Weekly Guitar Newsletter

Part 3 – Guitar Soloing Tips from “Down Under”

This week we continue our series of guitar instructional videos that are being provided by Chris Elmore of Guitartips.au.  The material Chris has been providing is focused upon lead guitar and guitar soloing, so it fits nicely with the material I normally provide you in these newsletters and in my courses.   These are very short vids with some text narrative and tablature to accompany them.

A Weird Way To Really Improve Your Lead Guitar Playing

Chris has an entire instruction course dedicated to the topic of guitar soloing.  If you’d like to learn more about this you can find that information here: http://tinyurl.com/aqqca8n

Carribean Cruise

One of the reasons I haven’t had time to assemble some new video lessons for the newsletter, and the reason I am relying on Chris (and others) is because we are preparing for what has become our annual Carribean Cruise. If you’d like to hear me playing lead guitar in person – and of course the rest of the guys in the band… please consider joining us for this cruise.  The basic information is listed below. Hope to see you there.  Anchors Away.

It has been about a month since we launched the GuitarRx App for smartphones.  This is completely new territory for us, and we didn’t know what to expect.  However, so far things seem to be going well.  The app is already installed on more than 1000 phones.  If you have an Android or iOS based phone or tablet, I encourage you to check out this app.   There is a nice video illustration of the app at our website:  www.guitarrx.com

The app is free, so if you’d like to install it and give it a try, I have provided the direct download links below:

Part II – Guitar Soloing Tips from “Down Under”

If you didn’t get last week’s newsletter, I am very busy the next 2 months with several projects and don’t have time to put together video tips for the newsletter as I have been doing in the recent past.  To help me bridge this gap I am continuing what we started last week by providing video tips from Chris Elmore, of material focused upon lead guitar and guitar soloing.  These video tips are both fairly brief so I am providing two to them for you.

Guest Instructor – Guitar Soloing Tips from “Down Under”

My schedule is pretty booked for the next couple of months.  So my ability to get you video lessons is going to be limited.  I was looking for some quality material to provide you in my absence.  Fortunately, I recently checked in with Chris Elmore, a guitar buddy from Down Under, and he reminded me that he has a bunch of material focused upon lead guitar and guitar soloing.   Chris agreed to provide me with some free video tips on guitar soloing. The first two appear below.

Augmented Chord with lowering of tonic note

Hope you are all surviving the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season. When you need a break, take a few minutes and check out this new lesson. It’s very cool and another lesson that you won’t find many instructors talking about.

In last week’s lesson, we looked at augmented chords and how they work in a chordal sequence when the 5th of a chord is raised. In this week’s lesson, we will look at the augmented chord when the tonic note of a chord is lowered, one half step at a time. Many songs like “Stairway to Heaven,” “Time in a Bottle” and “Michelle” use this chordal sequence. Get ready to learn how to play a “minor 6” chord, as well. It’s really very, very cool. So check out the video and learn this invaluable stuff.

http://youtu.be/r7eLmo_NV9w

And as a quick reminder: If you like what you are learning in these video newsletters, please let me know. If you would like me to cover certain topics, let me know that too. I also strongly suggest that you check out my “Learn2Jam” guitar improvisation soloing course. If you want to learn to play YOUR OWN LEADS through improvising or just be a better lead player, you got to check it out. It will literally save you years of learning time. I promise that I can get you soloing quicker than you ever can imagine.

GuitarRx App for your Smartphone

Finally at long last, both version – iPhone and Android – of the GuitarRx Practice Riff app are now available.  This is a great companion to the Guitar Leads Master Volume and the Learn2Jam Guitar Soloing Systems because it allows you to practice and learn some great riffs and licks on your guitar by making them portable and allowing you to take them with you.

If you haven’t heard me talk about this app previously you can find out more from our website, which includes a video which discusses the app.

This app is FREE and comes pre-loaded with 5 free lessons plus an addition 4 more that will be send over the first week after you install it.

The Guitarist’s Must-Have Tool – Slow Down Software

Both the Guitar Leads Master Volume and the GuitarRx app feature slowed down audio.  Why?  Because it greatly enhances and increases one’s ability to learn to play a song, or solo, or riff.  A slow downer is simply one of those must-have tools in your tool box.   And Song Surgeon is the best of these types of products when it comes to slowing down and looping audio.

If you don’t own a slow down type product, or you have an old one and are looking to upgrade to a better one, I wholeheartedly suggest you take a look at Song Surgeon.

They have a pre-Christmas sale that ends on the 20th that can save you up to 50% off the normal price.

Tony’s Weekly Guitar Newsletter – Smart Phone app announcement

Dear Friend,

Welcome to the Tony’s Weekly Guitar Newsletter

TODAY’S TOPIC – Augmented Chords

I know I’m a bit late in getting you my weekly newsletter this week, but with all of the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving and Black Friday sales, I found myself ‘behind the 8 ball,’ as they say. (The women trapped me into doing some cooking this year. But that’s another story…) Anyway…

This lesson is very cool and one you won’t find many instructors talking about. And yet, when you need this silver bullet, nothing can take its place.

Obviously, there are tons of chords that you can learn to play. Most of them are inversions of ‘normal’ chords (like the ones you and I play,) which you will never need, unless you become a ‘Jazzer.’ But there is one type of chord that you will need in your playing that no one talks about and yet nothing can take its place.

In this lesson, I show you what this Tension chord is, how to play it and how to use it and play inversions of it. It’s really very, very cool. So check out the video and learn this invaluable stuff.

Tony’s Weekly Guitar Newsletter & Black Friday Specials

Dear Friend,

Welcome to the Tony’s Weekly Guitar Newsletter

Understanding and Using Dynamics in Soloing

HAPPY TURKEY DAY!

I know I’m early this week, but with all of the hustle and bustle to come, I wanted to get your newsletter letter out to you before the panic sets in.

This lesson is a bit different than those I have given before. Most guitar work can be explained with objective mechanics. Through time those mechanical elements take on some grease and before you know it, your sound starts to mature. This lesson is a lesson on “DYNAMICS.” It’s meant to open the door to those who never have thought about this element when playing. It’s one of the “maturing” elements in playing the guitar. The earlier you start the better it will be down the road.

Just remember that when you are playing a solo, you are trying to say something to someone. If you were speaking to someone, you would raise and lower your voice for emphasis. It’s no different on the guitar. If you are screaming all of the time it drives people crazy. If you whisper all of the time, people won’t hear you. You need to blend the two along with a normal level of playing.

This lesson will get you started in a great way. (I wish I had someone to show me all of this stuff when I was learning to play!)

A quick reminder: If you like what you are learning in these video newsletters, please let me know. If you would like me to cover certain topics, let me know that too. I strongly suggest that you to check out my Learn2Jam guitar improvisation soloing course. If you want to learn to play YOUR OWN LEADS through improvising or just be a better lead player, you got to check it out. It will literally save you years of learning time. I promise that I can get you soloing quicker than you ever can imagine.  And right now you can grab this course and a handful of free gifts when you buy under our special Black Friday promo…. see the details below.

GuitarRx Android App

Last week I provided a link to our new GuitarRx Android app.  I asked for you help by asking you to download the app and then to let me know if it worked correctly.  Specifically I wanted to know, after installing the app, if you received additional daily free lessons for the next several days.   I would very much like to hear from you if you did download and install the app.  You can go to the Library folder of the app and count the number of lessons.  The app is preloaded with 5, so by now, a week later, this library should have 9 free lessons in it.
Please send me a quick email and let me know if you do or do not have these lesson in the library folder.  You can email me at info@guitarrx.com.   Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Enjoy the lesson and the Turkey!

Learn2Jam Guitar Soloing System
Interactive Guitar Leads Master Volume

p.s.  Of course, the main event in this special promotion is my Learn2Jam Guitar Soloing System which you have heard me talk about in this newsletter.

Let me tell you a little more about each of these items. You can see all of them in the above graphic.

The Guitar Leads Master Volume contains more than 425 individual practice segments and riffs from some of the world’s greatest classic rock songs.  These are bundled with full and half speed audio and accurate tablature.

The 2GB mp3 player is a great device for loading and storing backing tracks and other songs and riffs you’d like to learn.  Once you have copies them onto this device you can then use your earbuds or the external speaker to play them back hands free so you can play along with your guitar at the same time.   This allows you to become mobile and not rely on your computer for song playback.

The Ipod/Mp3 External speaker is probably my favorite of the goodies.  I should mentioned that not only is it an external speaker (for a computer, ipod, mp3 player, phone, etc.) it is an FM radio with presets.  What I like about this external speaker is that I can connect it to my Phone or ipod and it allows me to play songs without being tied to earbuds or headphones all the time.  It is a compact, small speaker that gives surprisingly good quality output. I find more and more that I am sitting somewhere with my phone and would like to have an external speaker.  This fits the bill nicely.

Tony’s Guitar Leads Newsletter – Smart Phone App Update…

Dear Friend,

Welcome to the Tony’s Weekly Guitar Newsletter

TODAY’S TOPIC – Update

Hey everyone. I just returned from Florida from a gig and am sick as a dog. Too much crazy flying this week. No sleep and run down. Consequently, no video lesson this week.  Next week will be better, and I will try to have one for you then.  In addition, I am planning on running some kind of Black Friday promotion, beginning next week.  So stay tuned.

GuitarRx App Now Available – Help Needed

Finally, after months of telling you about the GuitarRx Riff App, I am pleased to tell you we are almost done.  We have an android version available for downloading.  I would very much appreciate your help in completing the testing on this app.   Here is the link

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.sharpwebstudio.guitarrx1&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd

The app comes loaded with 5 lessons, and then it should send additional lessons to you on a daily basis, one each day, over the next 4-5 days.  As these additional daily lessons are sent you should receive a notification on your phone that a new lesson is available.

Here is how you can help:

  1. Tell me if you receive the additional 4-5 free lessons and the corresponding notification.
  2. Also, take a look around the app and let me know if you have any suggestions.
  3. If you like what you see, please leave us a positive comment and feedback.

The iPhone version of the GuitarRx app has been submitted to Apple and we are waiting for their approval.  That should come within the next week.  Once it is released, it will be announced in this newsletter and will also be asking your help to download and test the iPhone version.

TODAY’S TOPIC – Setting Up Your Guitar

It was great catching up with all of you last week. The summer was full of travel and lots of great gigs. But now it’s time to get back to work. Last week I was talking to a friend of mine that has a daughter who is trying to learn how to play her first guitar leads. He told me of all the trouble she was having bending the strings and even just pressing them down. I asked him if her guitar was ever “set up?” He looked at me puzzled and I then flashed back to my own learning obstacles. That being said let me ask you a few questions and then offer you some free advice.

  • When you bought your guitar, was it already set-up?
  • Is your guitar set-up properly now?
  • When was the last time you had your guitar set-up?
  • Do you know what a “Set-up” consists of?

Well let’s first talk about what a set-up is. A proper guitar set-up is a condition that your guitar should be in, in order to play to your greatest potential. The parts of the guitar that are part of a proper set-up are the bridge, the nut, the saddles and the truss rod. Here is a diagram of these parts:

The BRIDGE is responsible for your string height. IF IT IS SET TOO HIGH, you will have a lot of trouble pressing and holding your strings down because the strings ride over the bridge. In addition, bending your strings will be much more difficult. If the bridge IS SET TOO LOW, your strings will buzz and you’ll lose the quality of your string tones.

The 6 SADDLES are little micro bridges that sit on top of the bridge. These are used to get the neck in tune with itself. There needs to be a very precise distance from the nut of the guitar to the point where the string contacts the saddle. Adjusting the saddles is part of setting your guitar’s “INTONATION.”

The NUT is the starting point for where the strings come in contact with the NECK of the guitar. Sometimes the spaces for the strings on the nut are too tight. That can cause a string to bind and cause problems in winding your string, as you will hear a clicking sound and an over-tuning. If the NUT has been worn down too low over time, the strings will ride too low on the neck’s first few frets and BUZZ.

The TRUSS ROD is the hidden part of the guitar that is so important. As time goes on and temperature changes affect your guitar’s wooden parts, the neck has a tendency to bow inward or outward in certain spots. So some places on the neck may be concave and some convex, causing the guitar to be hard to play and inconsistent, playing out of tune. That’s when you need an adjustment by a pro!

Finally, the gauge of the strings you use is very, very important: too heavy/thick and you will need the hands of a construction worker to play your axe; too thin and you will lose the tone that your guitar has to offer you. A nice gauge that gives you good tone and great flexibility is .009 thru .042.

That should give you some things to think about. Unless you are an expert, I strongly recommend that you have your guitar set-up by expert and see the difference. Let the pro know how you want your guitar to feel and what kind of music you mostly play and they will help you maximize your talent. Music is supposed to be fun and I find that there are too many people that have suffered trying to learn how to play and then end up quitting because their guitar was not set-up properly. 43 years ago, I almost became one of those people. I don’t want to see this happen to you. I hope this helps guys!

Learn2Jam Guitar Soloing System

There are many, many courses available that teach guitar rudiments.  My Learn2Jam guitar is truly unique. It goes beyond rudiments and teaches you how to put together information you learn and harness it to allow you to improvise or solo.  If you are a reader of my newsletter I presume you have heard about it and perhaps even watched some of the video excerpts from it.

This month we have a very special promotion for Learn to Jam.  It may well be the best package of goodies we have every provided in a promotion.   Take a look at what I am talking about.

  • A 33% price reduction (from $149 to $99)
  • A FREE copy of my Guitar Leads Master Volume ($97)
  • A FREE 2 GB mp3 player ($49 value)
  • A FREE external mini speaker ($29 value)

Bottom line, when you buy Learn2Jam for $99, we throw in $169 of goodies + $50 of discounts for a total package of more than $219 in discounts and goodies.

Let me tell you a little more about each of these items. You can see all of them in the graphic just to the left of this text.
